Trauma is a Complex Experience

Most people have heard of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which is a mental health condition caused by witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event. The triggering event can be anything that causes major distress or harm, such as exposure to physical or emotional abuse, personal assault, natural disasters or a serious accident.

People who live with PTSD usually experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Feelings of shame, guilt or anxiety.
  • Upsetting flashbacks of the triggering event.
  • Feeling physically and emotionally distressed by memories of the event.
  • Persistent sadness or low moods.
  • Difficulty sleeping.
  • Difficulty completing day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Trouble feeling positive emotions towards people or activities you once enjoyed.

However, many people experience trauma symptoms that aren’t necessarily linked to a single ‘obvious’ and/or terrifying experience. In fact, sadly, many people have experienced prolonged, repeated or multiple forms of traumatic exposure such as childhood abuse or torture. This is referred to as Complex Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD). The team at PPC are extremely experienced at working with individuals who have experienced CPTSD, having engaged in additional training in the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of this disorder. In particular, our team have trained in EMDR (see below) as well as trauma focussed, somatic (body based) and schema therapies. All of which have an evidence base that demonstrates their effectiveness at assisting healing.

One highly effective technique used to treat PTSD is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, otherwise known simply as EMDR therapy. Using this approach, your therapist will guide your eye movements in a way that helps your brain reprocess a traumatic memory. In doing so, the goal is to help this trauma feel less present, allowing you to begin moving past it.

While EMDR therapy is one of the most effective ways to overcome trauma, it is not necessarily the right approach for everyone. For this reason, your psychologist will determine what the best technique is for your particular situation and long-term mental health goals.
