What is perinatal/postnatal depression?

Perinatal mental illness is a term used to describe mental health conditions that occur during the perinatal period, which begins during pregnancy and continues throughout the first-year post-birth. There are several different mental health problems that may occur in new mothers of fathers throughout this time, including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. While these experiences are difficult, they can be managed and overcome by seeing a perinatal psychologist.

Perinatal conditions such as these are often misconceived as the ‘baby blues’. However, unlike the baby blues which often only lasts up to a week post-birth, these perinatal conditions are long-lasting and do not go away without treatment.

How can a perinatal/postnatal depression psychologist help?

Perinatal or ‘motherhood counselling’ has been proven as one of the most effective ways for parents to overcome conditions such as post-partum depression or anxiety. Motherhood psychologists understand the unique challenges that new parents face and teach evidence-based techniques to help manage symptoms as they occur in your day-to-day life.

Our aim is to provide state of the art care in a way that is personable, compassionate and focused on guiding each client towards health and wellbeing. Whether you are adjusting to having your first baby or if you have simply added one more to your existing family, perinatal conditions can affect you just the same. Throughout this major transition, we are here for you every step of the way.
