What does a psychologist do?
Seeing a psychologist is one of the most effective ways to manage and overcome mental health challenges. While on the outside it may seem like you simply sit in a chair and talk about your feelings, the truth is that psychological counselling and psychotherapy is far more complex. Many people begin therapy looking for strategies. And yes, strategies are important. But just like any tool, we actually need to know what it’s best used for.
As such, a consistent focus in therapy is gaining a deep understanding of the challenges the individual is facing. From there, therapists are able to support and guide people to make the changes they want in their lives. With a combination of increased self-awareness, better access to their own thoughts and feelings, understanding of patterns of relating to themselves and others, learning new tools and strategies AND actually using them, our clients are able to create far healthier and rewarding ways of living their lives. Here at Perth Psychology Collective, we offer individual therapy for people who are experiencing difficulties that result from a mental illness or a significant and difficult life event. This can include anything from past trauma to bereavement, relationship breakdowns, and major life transitions such as becoming a parent. By using evidence-based approaches suited to your personal experiences, needs and goals, we help you understand the root causes, navigate the symptoms and make meaningful change in patterns of unhelpful behaviour. We also offer couples therapy for those who are finding their relationship a source of difficulty. Sometimes couples can experience challenges due to life events (of one or both people) such as death of a family member, becoming parents, caring for aging parents, job loss or mental health issues or infidelity. Other couples seek therapy because they want to communicate more effectively or deepen their connection with one another.

How can I make counselling sessions more affordable?
There are a few different ways that you can make seeing a counselling psychologist more affordable. If you are eligible for Medicare, you can request a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP, which allows you to access up to 10 subsidised counselling sessions per year via a Medicare rebate. Alternatively, if you have Private Health Insurance, you may be able to access subsidised counselling via your policy. In this situation, you will not need to have a MHCP.
If you have any questions about this process, please don’t hesitate to contact our clinic!
