Angela Hislop

I am a registered Counselling Psychologist (MPsych) with over twenty years’ experience, primarily with children, adolescents and their parents or carers.  I have worked in both Government and private settings, including education, health, child protection, disability and private practice.  Typical presentations that I work with include anxiety, depression, unexplained emotional dysregulation or overwhelm, behavioural challenges, family separation, or those with risk-related presentations and/or a trauma histories. 

In my therapeutic work, I draw on a variety of evidence-based interventions specifically adapted to be child-friendly and trauma informed, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy; Trauma Focused CBT; Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. Ensuring that young people feel safe and comfortable as well as interested and engaged is paramount to working therapeutically in this space.  So too, is working collaboratively with parents/carers, school staff, medical professionals and other allied health practitioners.

I have a particular interest in the importance of attachment relationships in the psychological development of children and young people, and I have advanced training in Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (Daniel Hughes), and Circle of Security Parenting. 

The world of neurodivergence (ie: Autism and/or ADHD) is another particular focus, where I have worked with undiagnosed children, completing preliminary observations and screening to make recommendations around potential further assessment and referral.  I have also worked with children and teens with diagnoses of Autism who have NDIS Plans and in my current role, I am able to see those whose NDIS Plan is self-managed or plan-managed.
