What exactly is marriage and couples counselling?

Marriage or couples counselling is a therapeutic approach to helping partners overcome the unique issues that are affecting their relationship. Similar to personal counselling, this involves the couple meeting with a psychologist to talk about their experiences within the relationship and the challenges they are facing.

In most cases, a therapist will work with you and your partner towards one or more ‘goals’ – for example, regaining trust or learning how to communicate in a healthy way. Over time, the aim is to help couples learn effective tools such as how to communicate better, navigate personal differences and how to approach conflict in a healthy way.
